Ammonia is gaining interest as energy carrier for applications such as refrigeration, heat production, fuel cells and novel engines. Stored in its liquid form, it needs permanent refrigeration or dealing with pressures higher than 10bar. Ammonia storage in a solid form can offer better safety considerations, allowing lower storage pressures. Sofrigam, through its Coldway Technologies brand, has a gained experience developing and commercializing solid ammonia storage systems, based on a reversible sorption-desorption reaction. After briefly introducing the working principle, 3 aspects concerning its on demand use will be discussed: refrigeration, heat production and desorption flow rates.
