Energy transition is in full motion, and especially ammonia as a hydrogen carrier looks as really promising but also challenging due to the toxic aspect. In our presentation we provide an insight in the responsibilities and legislation along the value chain, for workers at an ammonia terminal and in the unlikely case of an incident: how to manage an incident with NH₃ during inland transport. And as inland shipping being the preferred and directly available modality for transport inland in the Netherlands, we conclude our presentation with an insight in how risks are managed during inland shipping

This presentation explores advanced catalyst technologies enabling the low-carbon ammonia economy.

As ammonia emerges as the most cost-competitive hydrogen carrier (121 kg H₂/m³ energy density), catalysts become essential for both synthesis and cracking processes.

The AMON project develops and validates a Direct Ammonia Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (DA-SOFC) system for clean, high-efficiency stationary power generation. The consortium covers the full value chain from cell and stack design, testing, and safety validation to system integration and techno-economic assessment. Technical results demonstrate electrical efficiencies above 65%, with total efficiencies exceeding 85% when integrated with CHP. The techno-economic analysis confirms that CAPEX targets below 3,000 €/kW are achievable at pre-industrial scale, significantly improving LCOE and financial performance. Emissions analysis shows up to ~96% CO₂ reduction when using green ammonia compared to grey pathways. The results identify off-grid and port cold-ironing applications as promising early markets, providing a technically validated and economically credible pathway toward commercial deployment.

Efficient ammonia extraction remains one of the key challenges for next-generation green ammonia systems. Conventional technologies rely on energy-intensive refrigeration and compression, which increase system complexity, cost, and energy demand.

This presentation introduces a sorption-based approach to ammonia extraction using advanced solid sorbents. The technology enables direct ammonia extraction from synthesis gas at near-ambient temperature, significantly reducing energy consumption while improving overall process efficiency.

The talk will discuss the principles of sorption-driven ammonia extraction, its integration into modern ammonia synthesis systems, and the potential impact on the economics of green ammonia production. Early prototype development and pilot-scale deployment plans will also be presented.

Ammonia (NH₃) is emerging as a promising carbon-free fuel for maritime applications due to its high energy density and existing infrastructure. Direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs) offer an efficient pathway for onboard electricity generation; however, challenges such as slow reaction kinetics and catalyst stability remain. In this work, we explore metal- and metal oxide-based nanomaterials integrated with graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as electrocatalysts for ammonia oxidation. The materials are synthesized using scalable methods and characterized structurally using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical studies demonstrate improved catalytic activity and enhanced charge transport due to the synergistic effect of metal-based components and conductive carbon frameworks. These findings highlight the potential of engineered nanocomposites to advance DAFC technology for sustainable maritime energy systems.

Low-emission ammonia production is scaling up, while implementation is also demonstrated in ammonia energy sectors such as ammonia for power and heat, ammonia as maritime fuel, and ammonia cracking. This requires ammonia certification, for producers to demonstrate relevant environmental attributes to traders and consumers.

Toward the end of 2025, the AEA launched the pilot of its AEA Ammonia Certification System.
