Energy transition is in full motion, and especially ammonia as a hydrogen carrier looks as really promising but also challenging. Because of the toxic aspects, safety is an important factor in the use of ammonia. In the Netherlands, the BAT ( Best Available Technic) PGS 12 contains the safety requirements of the receiving terminal.
However PGS12 is not enough as an effort: people in surrounding urban areas are important stakeholders in case of a major incident. The want to know how terminals ensure that operations and processes with ammonia have enough safety attention. Also local governments perform studies how to deal with large scale ammonia import and special planning. My presentation gives an overview of the current projects in these topics, all against the background: How to communicate about ammonia and safety?
Insights are given in several projects, amongst them the NOVEX study performed for the province of Zuid-Holland.
